Barry, First, thank you for your comments. I certainly appreciate them and you bring up some valid points to discuss. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Atlantis. At this point I am reliant on stock abutments, but that does not seem to pose any problems for us. There are various angles available and when necessary (although very rarely), we have been able to cast to and make telescopic copings to solve a particular problem. I am not relying on the contour of the abutment to shape the tissue but rather the crown. This has not been a problem, but as you stated, cement removal can be. There are various techniques that are available to remove excess cement prior to cementing intraorally and we consistently use them. There are also abutments available for screw retention, if that is your choice. When you say that there are other systems more user friendly you are also correct; however, in my opinion that is not the best way of choosing any system. The biological response we have seen over the past 7 years has been outstanding. By the way, I also use other implant systems when referred. Lastly, the donut bet is interesting. The Atlantis abutments may ultimately look better on the preparation aspect, but the key is with the conical connection. That’s where the success takes place. Let's see what happens. Nice presentation, however, I wonder if your opinion will change once Ankylos has Atlantis abutments available for its system. A stock abutment on an "ideal" platform will never out preform an ideal abutment on an ideal platform, if not for cement removal alone. "Ham-string" your referrals with this system and a slightly misaligned fixture and see the results. Your only choice is a stock abutment and compromise all around. I see it all to often in my practice where the GPs give up with this system and what is available then ask me to bail them out. As a prosthodontist can you honestly say there is a higher comfort level with a stock zirconia abutment that has been ground upon by the lab to modify or an abutment that is milled specifically for the case and then fired? Yes, it is the system and the interface but there are other systems that are much more user friendly thus creating ideal from apex to emergence to function to esthetics. And I will bet dollars to donuts you will use Atlantis abutments once they are available. Thanks for listening.
